How Handling Website Management Almost Ruined My Business
When I first logged in to my computer today I was in good spirits. I love my life, i own my own business and although things get crazy sometimes, I’m doing what I love and i have no real complaints. That was until I logged into my computer today and found a few emails in my Inbox, one from a friend who happened to check my website out and couldn’t stop laughing and one from a potential customer that wondered if I was still in business.
My initial reaction was “what is wrong with these people?” I say this as I’m leisurely leaning into my couch coffee in hand. This is bliss remember. So I decided to log onto my website to see what all the fuss was about. I have to admit that until I saw these messages I hadn’t even considered going on my website today and I’m embarrassed to admit that it has been awhile since I did any work on it.
Clarity came pretty quickly as to why my friend laughed her heart out over my website. To say I’ve done no website maintenance in quite sometime is the understatement of the year. Look I’m busy making dollar bills people I can’t spend all my time uploading and downloading and answering comments all day, it wastes too much of my time.
As I continued to peruse my web pages my stress level started to increase. “Oh God,” I thought. I hadn’t updated a blog in months, no wonder people are wondering if I’m in business anymore. Some of the prices had to be adjusted as well. I’m blushing furiously now and there’s a tiny feeling of fear growing inside me as I wonder how much my neglect has hurt my business. I try to remain calm and refrain from literally ripping the hair out of my head.
How on earth was I to get all this done? I know what you’re thinking, I WAS just leisurely drinking coffee but I’ll have you know I drank three more cups since those emails just to try to relax. What I mean is how am I going to do this extra work on my website and also sell my products and fill orders? I don’t have time to write blogs, update info, add pictures when sales need to be made.
What’s a girl to do? So I made a few calls to my friends, I also got to hear that same friend laugh out loud on the telephone and ask me what was I thinking? But she was nice enough to point me in the right direction. It turns out there are people who run businesses of their own solely to help other businesses survive this craziness. They take on the tasks of doing all the work I despise and it frees up my time to do the things I have to do instead of worrying about how I’m going to get all this done.
They are kind of like superheros. Saving businesses everyday, and they go by the name of Virtual Assistants…
